My son and I did a BBQ road trip based largely on this book back in 2010. Although the book was originally printed years earlier, it was amazing that so many places were still there. Out of the 21 or so places we stopped at were there any changes. One had relocated and the other had changed it's name. Great book. Correct assessments for the most part.

good for just starting to learn
The author toured the country checking out many of the famous and not so famous barbecue joints. While promising secret recipes, there was nothing to get too excited about. Much of the material was very dated and many of the places featured are no longer in business. There are several books with more relevant information, better stories, and far better recipes. I wouldn't recommend this book.
